Creating a funeral program doesn’t have to feel confusing or technical. Every Noted & Charmed template is designed for beginners, and Canva makes it easy to update photos, text, and layout — even if you’ve never edited a design before. This guide walks you through each page of your template so you can personalize it quickly and confidently.
1. Customize the Front Cover (Right Side)
Main Cover Photo (Important: All Templates Use Different Frame Types)
My templates use many frame styles — circular, beveled, ornate, metallic, grouped, shape‑mask frames, and decorative overlays. Because of this, not every frame behaves like a standard Canva frame, and some require a quick layer adjustment so your photo sits correctly under the decorative frame.
Here is the correct process for every frame type:
Step A — Upload Your Photo
-
Go to Uploads → Upload Files
-
Add your main cover photo.
Step B — Try Dropping the Photo Into the Frame
Drag your photo onto the large front‑cover frame.
If it snaps in and fills correctly → perfect.
If it goes behind the frame or doesn’t snap at all, continue to Step C.
Step C — Open Canva’s Layers Panel (Actual UI)
-
Click directly on the frame
-
A small popup toolbar appears
-
Click Position
-
A left‑side slide‑out panel opens
-
Click Layers
This shows every element on the page in stacking order.
Step D — Confirm the Placeholder Is Already Above the Frame
In your templates, the image placeholder is already positioned above the decorative frame, so customers do not need to move anything.
If the photo didn’t snap into the frame, simply drag the photo onto the placeholder again.
Step E — Crop Your Photo BEFORE Moving It Under the Frame
Cropping cannot happen once the photo is under the frame, so do it now:
-
In Layers, make sure your photo is ABOVE the decorative frame
-
Double‑click the photo
-
Drag to reposition
-
Use corner handles to zoom
-
Click Done
This ensures your photo is perfectly positioned before the decorative frame sits on top.
Step F — Move Your Photo BELOW the Decorative Frame
Once cropping is complete:
-
Open Layers again
-
Drag your photo layer BELOW the decorative frame
-
The frame will now sit cleanly on top, giving the polished finished look
This is the correct workflow for all non‑standard frame types.

Part 3: Final Quality Check & Exporting for Print
1. Turn On Canva Guides (Free Canva Users Can Do This)
Your template already includes built‑in alignment guides. To make sure all text and photos stay inside the safe area:
-
Go to File (top left)
-
Click View Settings
-
Turn on Show Guides
-
Turn on Show Rulers (optional)
This helps you visually confirm that:
-
no text is drifting too close to the edge
-
photos stay centered inside their frames
-
fold alignment remains correct
-
nothing important sits in the unprintable margin
(Free Canva users cannot enable bleed or crop marks, but guides work for everyone.)
2. Quick Visual Check Before Downloading
Before saving your file, do a simple review:
-
Confirm names, dates, and service details are correct
-
Make sure photos are centered inside their frames
-
Ensure no important text touches the outer edge
-
Flip through each page to verify all images loaded properly
3. Download as a High‑Quality PDF (Free Canva)
Free Canva automatically exports at 300 DPI, even without Canva Pro.
To download:
-
Click Share
-
Select Download
-
Choose PDF Standard or PDF Print (if available)
-
Click Download
Your file will be print‑ready for home printers, funeral homes, or office‑supply stores.
4. IMPORTANT: Print Using “Shrink to Fit” (Recommended for 11×8.5 Templates)
Your funeral program is designed at a true 11×8.5 size. Most home and office printers cannot print edge‑to‑edge on letter‑size paper. They leave a small unprintable margin.
Because of this, choosing Actual Size may cause:
-
clipped edges
-
missing background
-
misaligned folds
To preserve the full design, select:
-
Shrink to Fit
-
Fit to Printable Area
-
Scale to Fit
These settings scale the page slightly so the entire design prints inside the printer’s safe area.
Avoid:
-
Actual Size
-
100% Scale
-
Do Not Scale
These options may cause trimming or cut‑off edges.
5. Home Printers Will Leave a White Border (Trim Required for Edge‑to‑Edge)
Since home printers cannot print full‑bleed on 11×8.5 paper, your printed pages will have a small white border.
If you want a clean, edge‑to‑edge finish:
-
Print using Shrink to Fit
-
Then trim the white border using scissors or a paper trimmer
This removes the unprintable margin and gives your program a professional, full‑bleed appearance.
(Professional print shops can print full‑bleed without trimming.)
Paper Tip for Best Results
Use:
-
28lb – 32lb smooth paper, or
-
80lb – 100lb text weight
This prevents show‑through and gives your program a polished finish.
