Find the words for a sympathy card
There is no perfect thing to say, and you don't need one. The cards families keep are rarely the polished ones. They're short, plain and honest. Choose a few things below and your note will take shape as you go. Change any word you like.
What you type stays on your own screen. We don't see it or save it, so copy your note before you close this page.
This is a made-up example so you can see how it works.
Words to skip, and what to say instead
- "Everything happens for a reason." "God needed another angel."
- Try: "I'm so sorry. I'm here."
- "I know how you feel."
- Try: "I can't imagine how hard this is." Even if you've lost someone too, their loss is their own.
- "At least..."
- Leave it out. Anything after "at least" makes the loss sound smaller.
- "They're in a better place."
- Only if you know the family believes that. Otherwise, "I'm holding them in my heart."
- "Let me know if you need anything."
- Offer one clear thing: "Can I bring dinner Tuesday?"
- "Stay strong." "Time heals."
- Try: "Take all the time you need. I'm not going anywhere."
- "Committed suicide."
- Say "died by suicide," or don't name the cause at all.
- "Addict" or "junkie."
- Use their name. They were so much more than how they died.
- "How did it happen?"
- Don't ask. If they want to tell you, they will.
- "You can have another baby."
- Never. Say their baby's name if they gave one.
- "It was just a pet."
- A pet can be family. "I know how much you loved her" is enough.
