Funeral Thank-You Card Wording: What to Write for Flowers, Food, Donations & More

Funeral Thank-You Card Wording

After the service, the cards and casseroles start to slow down, and then comes a stack of thank-you notes waiting to be written. It can feel like one more heavy thing on a pile that's already too high.

Here's some good news: these notes don't need to be long, and there's no strict deadline. A sentence or two, written with care, is plenty. Below is wording you can copy, change, and make your own.

When to Send Funeral Thank-You Cards

Many families send them within a few weeks to two or three months after the service, but there's no wrong time. A thank-you sent six months later is still a gift to the person who receives it.

Who usually gets one:

  • Anyone who sent flowers, food, or a donation
  • Pallbearers, readers, musicians, and the officiant
  • People who helped in a big way, like caring for pets, driving family, or organizing the meal
  • Hospice staff or caregivers

You don't need to send a card to everyone who attended or signed the guest book, unless you'd like to.

A helpful tip: You don't have to write them all yourself. It's completely okay to ask a sibling, adult child, or close friend to split the list with you. Many families also use a pre-printed message on the card and add just one personal line by hand.
